Contents

The course deals with scientific methodological approaches in psychology from different scientific perspectives and with different research designs, which is conducted by integrating theory, seminar discussions and practical exercises. The course includes (i) in-depth elaboration of basic scientific concepts, (ii) different perspectives regarding philosophy of science, history of psychology and research ethics, and (iii) research design for experimental, quasi-experimental, correlational, case and epidemiological studies as well as naturalistic studies based on interview and observation.

Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course the student shall show:

  • in-depth knowledge in the research methodology of psychology regarding scientific perspectives and research design
  • considerable in-depth knowledge about basic scientific concepts,
  • a wide understanding for different perspectives in philosophy of science and for different  doctrines in academic psychology throughout history,
  • in-depth knowledge about research ethical principles and be able to apply these on the own knowledge area by identifying and evaluating relevant
  • ethical aspects,
  • the ability to design studies of experimental, quasi-experimental, correlational, case and epidemiological character and naturalistic studies based on interview and observation.

Required Knowledge

Univ: 90 credits (Higher Education Credits/ hp) in any subject. Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish Upper Secondary course English A. Where the language of instruction is Swedish, applicants must prove proficiency in Swedish to the level required for basic eligibility for higher studies.

Form of instruction

The teaching forms include lectures, practical exercises under supervision, and seminars.

Examination modes

The examination includes written examination, practical exercises, and oral presentations at seminars. The grading scale for written examinations includes failed, passed, and passed with distinction, and for practical exercises and oral presentations the grading scale includes failed and passed. To pass the entire course, all examinations and compulsory parts must have been passed. The grade is an integrated judgment of the results from examination on the different parts and is given when all compulsory elements have been passed. A student is entitled examination at five occasions, and is entitled to be tested on the same syllabus as that for the ordinary examination occasion on at least two occasions within two years of the first registration. Exception to this rule can, for example, be that essential scientific changes of the course have been made. A student who has failed twice on an examination on a course or part of a course is entitled to have a new examinator appointed, unless special reasons disaffirm (HF 6 kap.22 §). Request for a new examinator is placed to the Board of Undergraduate Studies, Department of Psychology.

ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER
An application for crediting can be made for a part or a whole course based on previous studies or work experience. If the application is denied a written explanation will be given. It is possible to turn to the board of appeal at the univeristy if the application is denied.
