Contents
The aim of the course is to contribute to a critical understanding of social changes in the contemporary world. These changes are associated with concepts such as reflexive modernity, globalization, postcolonialism, cultural and gender identities. From historical and sociological perspectives the development of the modern global society are elucidated; and from there, the cleavages and problems of contemporary societies are analyzed. The course also provides an introduction of sociology as an academic discipline of global relevance.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course, the student will have
- knowledge about the global relevance of sociology as an academic discipline
- knowledge about sociological perspectives on modernity and globalization
- knowledge about colonialism and postcolonial theory
- knowledge about the meaning of cultural identities and gendered subjects in contemporary societies
- ability to analyze the current situation and problems of the global societies from a sociological perspective
- ability to apply the required knowledge when analysing relevant themes both in written form and in oral presentations.

Form of instruction
The teaching forms of the course are lectures and seminars. All seminars are compulsory.
Examination modes
For exam the students are supposed to write a paper discussing some of the relevant topics for the course. The judgement is to be individual for all courses given by the Department of Sociology.
The Swedish academic grading system includes three pass grades: Fail, Pass and Pass with distinction. An expanded scale is used for visiting students. The expanded scale is intended to be compatible with the scale used in the European Credit Transfer System (A-F).
Examination based on this syllabus cannot be guaranteed after two years from the start of the course.
