The aim of the course is to contribute to an understanding of social changes in the contemporary world. On a theoretical level changes are associated with concepts like reflexive modernity and globalization. At the empirical level changes can be found in the radically altered living conditions for various categories, strongly affecting social relations in societies. This course will combine a theoretical understanding of social change processes with empirical examples from various parts of the world, drawn from different research methods, providing a wide picture of actual changing living conditions and social relations.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course, the student will have
- knowledge about, and ability to describe social changes on a global level in the fields of work, nationhood and social inequalities
- ability to reflect on the effect of global changes on social psychological core issues such as the making of culture, coping with differences and intergroup relations
- ability to apply the required knowledge when analysing relevant themes both in written form and in oral presentations.
