Contents
Advanced knowledge of theories and models within occupational therapy. The course is focused
primarily on Enabling Occupation II, A Model of Human Occupation, and Occupational Therapy
Intervention Process Model, and the students will choose one additional model from among Kawa
model, Occupational Adaptation, Task-oriented approach, and Occupational Therapy Practice
Framework.
Expected learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
Clarify and analyze occupational therapy theories/models that are included in the course
Apply occupational therapy theories/models in a correct manner when planning and
implementing evaluations and interventions, as well to structure the occupational therapy
process
Search for and critically analyze evidence is relation to occupational therapy theories/models
Required Knowledge
Basic requirements for university studies, bachelor degree in occupational therapy or occupational
therapy diploma with a minimum of 180 ECTS or similar international exam are required for
acceptance into this course.
English proficiency equivalent to IELTS Academic Training minimum score 5.0 with no individual score below 4.5 (Tests taken before January 2005 not admissible or TOEFL minimum score 500 on paper based test and not below 4.0 on the TWE, Alternatively 173 on computer based test with iBT61 is also required as well as basic entrance requirements for higher studies in Swedish language proficiency if the course in taught in Swedish
Form of instruction
The course will be given in both English and Swedish, but the literature will be in English. The
teaching will be problem-oriented, and which means active searching for knowledge, critical thinking,
and problem-solving are stressed. The teaching format will be in large part independent study
combined with internet-based supervision and discussions. The course is planned as a modified
internet-based distance education course with a limited number of course meetings in Umeå, Sweden.
Examination modes
The final examination must be submitted in written form (either Swedish or English).
The students performance will be evaluated using a three-category scale: Exceeds expectations (VG),
Meets expectations (G), or Not acceptable (U).
In order to meet expectations in the course, the student must meet expectations in all required
components of the course. To exceed expectations, the student must receive a grade of Exceeds
expectations on the written exam.
Academic credit transfer
The Program Committee will decide whether an earlier education can be approved, completely or
partially (see the rules and regulations of the University).
