Main Field of Study and progress level:
Physiotherapy: First cycle, has less than 60 credits in first-cycle course/s as entry requirements
Grading scale: Pass with distinction, Pass, Fail
Responsible department: Physiotherapy
Established by: Programme Committee for the Occupational therapy, Physiotherapy and Physical Trainer Programs, 2014-04-23
Contents
The course provides the basis for planning, carrying out and reporting scientific work. Different study designs and methods are presented for both qualitative and quantitative data collection. A foundation in statistics and practical data processing using SPSS is included. Research ethics principles and guidelines are illustrated.
Expected learning outcomes
After completing the course, students shall be able to:
discuss and evaluate choices of methods in scientific work
carry out a descriptive analysis and hypothesis test for data material in practice
understand and be able to express the basic elements of qualitative data analysis
report on and discuss research ethics principles and guidelines
carry out a literature study within the subject area for a C-level dissertation and structure the knowledge obtained from this study
Form of instruction
The teaching includes lectures, literature studies and practical exercises. The course is given in English when international students are participating.
Examination modes
Examination takes place through written tasks, seminars and an individual written final examination. A three-point grading scale is used: pass with distinction, pass or fail. The grade of pass requires all tasks to be carried out satisfactorily in accordance with the specification in the course guide. The grade of the course is based on a summary of the results of all required tasks and is given once all of them are completed.
In the event that tests or compulsory modules cannot be repeated in accordance with applicable re-sit rules, another reasonably proportional task may be specified. The maximum number of times that a test may be taken is five. After three tests, students must apply for a place on a new course. Students who have failed twice are entitled to request another examiner via the programme committee. Otherwise, reference should be made to the programme syllabus for the Physiotherapy Programme.
Accreditation The programme committee shall consider whether previous education can be approved in full or in part for accreditation. (See the University’s Rules and Regulations and the Accreditation Regulations.)
Other regulations
Studies shall be carried out on equal terms in accordance with Umeå University’s steering document for gender and equal treatment (www.umu.se). Action will be taken against students who breach the Faculty of Medicine’s plagiarism policy, in accordance with chapter 10 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance.
