Contents
To ensure high patient and user safety, medical equipment is covered by special legislation. For companies and engineers, this places great demands on knowledge of risk management in the development and operation of medical technology systems. Today's Biomedical Engineering products are also often linked to the hospitals' computer record systems, which means that the combined systems in many cases become difficult to overview and control. This course gives you knowledge about how digital systems and care support should be designed to ensure that safety requirements for patients and hospital staff are met. The course provides an insight into the security issues surrounding medical technology information data systems and software development. In addition to lectures, the course includes a mandatory small project work. The course includes two modules:
1. Theory, 1 credit
2. Laboratory work, 1 credit
Expected learning outcomes
Expected study results
The student must be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
Explain in detail how digital healthcare systems should be designed to meet current security requirements.
In detail describe security issues concerning digital systems and software development.
Skill and ability
Analyze and compile risks and benefits for various digital systems
Valuing ability and approach
Discuss and evaluate medical systems from a future perspective, with a focus on sustainability and digitization.
Required Knowledge
University: At least 90 credits completed on a three-year engineering course, or at least 90 credits in one of the main areas of computer science, electronics, physics, chemistry, mathematics or mathematical statistics. English A/6 and Swedish for basic eligibility for university studies if the education is given in Swedish.
Form of instruction
The teaching is campus-based and is conducted in the form of lectures, digital material and project work that is carried out at the own workplace. Teaching can take place in English.
Examination modes
Module 1: Theory 1 ECTS This module is examined with a written examination. The grade is assessed with Fail (U) or Pass (G).
Module 2: Laboratory work 1 ECTS. This module is examined individuelly with a written report and oral presentation. The grade is assessed with Fail (U) or Pass (G).
To pass the course it requires that all examinations and obligatory modules are approved. The grade is based on the grade received on module 1.
A student who has received a passing result on an exam may not take a new exam.
The examiner can decide on deviations from the examination form of the syllabus. Individual adaptation of the form of examination must be considered based on the student's needs. The form of the examination is adapted within the framework of the curriculum's expected study results. A student who needs an adapted examination, and who has received a decision on the right to support from the coordinator for students with disabilities at the Student Centre, must request adaptation from the department responsible for the course no later than 10 days before the examination. The examiner decides on an adapted examination, which is then notified to the student.
Other regulations
In the event that the course plan ceases to apply or undergoes major changes, students are guaranteed at least three exam opportunities (including regular exam opportunities) according to the regulations in the course plan in which the student was originally course registered for a maximum of two years from the time the previous course plan ceased to apply.
