Contents

The course is an introduction to searching literature, performing research, and writing a scientific report. The course has the form of a conference, to provide a realistic environment. Another goal is that the student will develop his/her abilities to: make independent investigations and research into an interesting topic; write a scientific report about his/her work; and present his/her research orally.

The course starts with a lecture and the students' choice of topic at the beginning of the semester and ends with the student conference at the end of the semester. If the student wishes to do so, they can concentrate their work on the first or second half of the semester, based on individual preferences. To the extent possible, the peer review groups will be put together in a way that reflects these individual preferences.

Expected learning outcomes

After having completed the course the student will be able to:
Knowledge and Understanding

  • demonstrate advanced knowledge in a subfield of computer science chosen by the student based on his/hers previous studies and in consultation with the course responsible teacher

Skills and Abilities

  • identify the relevant scientific literature for a specific research question using different scientific databases and search engines
  • discuss the concept of science
  • write a scientific report in English
  • provide constructive feedback on another student's work
  • receive constructive feedback on his/her own work and with the help of this feedback improve their report
  • demonstrate experience of writing a report for a conference that applies the peer review system and
  • present the report orally in English

Required Knowledge

Univ: At least 60 ECTS credits in Computing Science, of which at least one course at Advanced level or equivalent.Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English A (IELTS (Academic) with a minimum overall score of 5.5 and no individual score below 5.0. TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test) with a minimum total score of 530 and a minimum TWE score of 4. TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test) with a minimum total score of 72 and a minimum score of 17 on the Writing Section).Where the language of instruction is Swedish, applicants must prove proficiency in Swedish to the level required for basic eligibility for higher studies.

Form of instruction

A significant portion of the course consists of individual work. Education is done in various forms throughout the course:

  • lessons on writing and presenting scientific reports and to find literature
  • group discussions ("peer review groups") and
  • individual supervision.

Examination modes

The examination consists of individual written reports, an oral presentation and participation in discussions in class hours and during the conference. Attendance during the group discussions and the conference is mandatory.

Students who submit an accepted contribution ("full paper") to the conference will orally present their contribution at the final conference.

On the course as a whole, the grades given are Fail (U), Pass (3) or Pass with Mark (4), or Pass with Distinction (5). In order to pass the course completely all mandatory parts must be passed as well. The final grade of the course is a summary assessment of the results and decided only after all mandatory parts are passed.
A student who has passed an examination may not be re-examined.
For all students who do not pass the regular examination there is another opportunity to do the examination. A student who has taken two tests for a course or segment of a course, without passing, has the right to have another examiner appointed, unless there exist special reasons (Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 6, section 22). Requests for new examiners are made to the head of the Department of Computing Science.
