Contents

This course concerns the application of digital signal processing techniques, with particular focus on methods that enhance the characteristics and information of signals that are recorded in different settings. The course covers topics as sampling and reconstruction of a digital signal, transform methods, Windowing methods, filtering, noise reduction, spectral analysis and system identification. Additionally, the course also covers applications of Wavelets.  The course is given in the form of three independent projects, and in collaboration with the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Umeå University Hospital. The first project focuses on one-dimensional signal processing, the second on two-dimensional signal processing, and third project is based on a current research or development project at the Dept. of Biomedical engineering.

Engineers are frequently discovering new ways to process digitals signals using a variety of mathematical formulae and algorithms. Biomedical signal processing involves the application of these methods for analysis of e.g. heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation levels, blood glucose, nerve conduction, brain activity, to provide useful information upon which clinicians can gain insights into the physiological process and aid in clinical assessments.

 

Required Knowledge

For admission to the course at least 90 ECTS previous studies, including the following courses: Analog Circuits, 6 ECTS, and Transform Methods, 7.5 ECTS, or equivalent.
Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper Secondary course English A/5. Where the language of instruction is Swedish, applicants must prove proficiency in Swedish to the level required for basic eligibility for higher studies.
