Contents

This course aims to provide knowledge of genetic theory, methodology and analysis. Subject matter includes genetic principles and the underlying mechanisms at molecular level as well as at the cellular, organism and population levels. The course will provide students with an overall understanding of genome organization and how genetic changes at the molecular level are able to influence biological processes and how these changes affect organisms, populations and ultimately evolution.

The course consists of two parts:

Part 1 - Theory: The course deals with genetic theory, methodology and analysis. The focus is on genetic principles and the underlying mechanisms at the molecular, cellular, organism and population level. In the theoretical part the genomic organization and evolution, development, genetic principles, epigenetics, inheritance and environment, human genetics and population genetics is presented and discussed. Each topic (presented in lectures) is followed by a teacher-led discussion that aims to link together these elements in a selected biological context. The theoretical part also includes exercises where genetic analysis is trained and training to read, understand and present original articles within the field.

Part 2 - Laboratory: The laboratory course will provide training in genetic experiments and data analysis.
