Welcome to TAIGA’s first meeting on the theme of AI and power & democracy!
The rapid uptake of artificial intelligence has had, and is having a dramatic impact on society in general and, in particular, on democratic processes and consolidation and renegotiations of power structures. Within Umeå, several research activities have been emerging on connecting AI and power & democracy and many more researchers across the university have raised their interests in such collaborations. Within TAIGA, this is a line of activity we seek to promote under the theme “AI and power & democracy”.
Within this meeting, which will be organized as a guided discussion, we will create a space for the involved participants to share about their activities and interests around the theme of “AI and power & democracy”. The participants will get out of this meeting an overview of who is actively interested in the theme, what activities are possible, emerging, ongoing, and realized within Umeå, and what are the common needs that can enable new research initiatives. The contents discussed within this meeting will also serve as strategic insights on how the theme AI and power & democracy can support further transdisciplinary collaborations. Some space, around a fika, will be left open for networking.
In order to allow for as many people as possible, this meeting assumes a broad framing of AI and power & democracy, including (non-exhaustively) the influence of AI on power and democratic processes (e.g., integration of AI in disinformation or capitalist structures) and reciprocally (e.g., regulation around AI, societal biases included in AI technologies), as well as the use of AI methods for power and democracy research (e.g., AI-powered data gathering and analytics of political speeches). Likewise, power and democracy are considered at large, including for example, classic sociology and political sciences as well as critical theories, gender studies, and management.
The meeting is primarily intended to discuss ongoing future research activities, but other interests are welcome (e.g., developing educational activities around this theme, society actors willing to inform or be informed about the theme).
Please register before 15 April so we can order fika and adapt the organisation such that every voice can be heard. AI and Power – Fyll i formulär
