Managing declining work capacity at old age: the case of Västerbotten 1890 – 1960.
Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to study how individuals managed declining work capacity at old age. My case of study is the county of Västerbotten (Sweden) between 1890 and 1960. More specifically, I study the relation between three provision strategies: support from the family, self-provision and the support from public sector; where the family includes support from a spouse, adult children or siblings, self-provision includes labour force participation and occupational pensions, and the public sector includes the expanding public pension. With data from the POPLINK-database, I conduct longitudinal cohort analyses, of cohorts grouped by their eligibility to one of the three different public pension reforms that where introduced during the period. This paper goes more into detail about my thesis, as well as present preliminary results regarding the changing family strategies.
