Abstract

In this talk, Ymer and Cyanne share how hacking and tinkering can revealing cracks in the polished surfaces of generative AI. These cracks expose hidden power structures and extraction processes. Putting a mirror to the algorithm is a method of using feedback loops to reveal parts of deeper faults and biases in the algorithms. Exposing these parts of the inner problematics that would otherwise be smoothed over through slick commodification.

Ymer and Cyanne will dive into their recent works to show how immersion and alternative storytelling open up new ways of engaging with AI’s complexities. One of these works, Model Collapse, depicts the landscapes from which AI emerges—its self-consuming origins in the extraction of earth’s resources and data—through a playful, glitching, ever-changing generative environment and archive of stories.

Event type: Lecture

Ymer Marinus is an artist who delves into the mysteries of human connection with (digital) technology. Recently involved in uncovering the ever growing mysteries surrounding Ai. They believe that invisible tech should not be feared but examined, dissected, and re-experienced in a new, raw form. Their work aligns with hacking ideology, focusing on reclaiming and repurposing technologies to uncover underlying power structures and discomfort. This discomfort often arises from systemic issues such as the pursuit of capturing attention, reinforcing hidden biases, or prioritizing endless profit. Ymer sees technologies as politicized tools that reflect broader societal forces but also as opportunities for transformation. By taking them apart, reassembling them, or chaining them together in different ways, deeper truths can be revealed and more meaningfull experiences can be uncovered.

Cyanne van den houten (they/she) is a media artist based in utrecht and rotterdam (NL) who seeks to uncover digital mysteries and make technology’s hidden layers tangible. their practice is rooted in open-source thinking, collaboration, queer and feminist tech (histories), and a care for (DIY) tools that stay open and legible.
