Daniel will be presenting work on different strategies to emerge data on minorities that for different reasons are invisible in official statistics. While Daniel will be physically present in Umeå, we have to keep the seminar on Zoom as long as the current distance decision by the principal stands. Daniel will present for 30-45 minutes, followed by a Q and A.
Abstract
There is a growing support to the idea that public policies should be based on evidence, but, at the same time, minorities are usually invisible in statistics. This applies to different social groups defined by their ethnicity, administrative status (irregular, asylum seekers, refugees, cross border citizens), and other sociodemographic characteristics (religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, economic status, and other diverse backgrounds). The levels of invisibility may differ among countries and in the different statistical data sources. This seminar reviews different strategies to emerge data about minorities, and the different challenges and limitations to achieve this goal. It concludes providing examples from my experience studying the health status of the migrants and Roma populations in Europe using survey-based research.
