Welcome to a special seminar in IceLab!
Stress Response Modeling at IceLab guest researcher Rike Stelkens will give a talk in IceLab titled 'Yeast as a model system for ecology, evolution, and climate change' May 13 at 11am.
Accelerating climate change and extreme temperature events urge us to better understand and forecast evolutionary responses. In the Stelkens lab, we harness the power of experimental evolution with the microbial model system yeast (Saccharomyces spp.) to measure the evolutionary potential of populations to adapt to future climate challenges. The seminar will also cover applied aspects of using wild yeasts for the production of novel fermentation products.

About the speaker
Rike Stelkens is Professor of Evolutionary Biology at Stockholm University, where she leads a research group studying how populations adapt to environmental change. Her work uses yeast as a model system to investigate the genetic and evolutionary mechanisms underlying adaptation—particularly in response to temperature and climate change—combining experimental evolution with genomics to understand both fundamental processes and real-world impacts.
About the IceLab Excellence Center Network
We invite researchers from anywhere to engage in our Stress Response Modeling at IceLab activities as visiting research fellows. We aim to foster interdisciplinary collaboration in modeling adaptive mechanisms in living systems under stress. Activities include research, seminars, workshops, conferences, and our research school. Rike Stelkens is a guest lecturer for Stress Responses and Mechanisms, a new PhD course within the Stress Response Modeling research school.
