"Rerun": Publication pressure and ethics in (co-) authorship

Time Tuesday 17 November, 2026 at 15:00 - 16:30
Place Aula Biologica, the Biology Building

Publication is an integral part of being a researcher across all academic disciplines, but the process often raises difficult and sensitive questions. Who is entitled to authorship? How should the order of authors be determined? What should you do when formal guidelines conflict with established practices in your field? And how can junior researchers navigate disagreements with supervisors and research leaders, particularly when they are in a position of dependence?

In June, the Council for the Promotion of Good Research Practice (REDA) hosted an open seminar on these issues. The seminar attracted considerable interest, with many participants, questions and lively discussion. REDA is now organising a follow-up discussion focusing on publication pressure, academic merit and the ethics of (co-)authorship.

The discussion will focus on how norms and expectations can vary between disciplines – and how differences can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or conflicts. Building on questions raised at the previous seminar, the discussion will also highlight some of the dilemmas that junior researchers may face.

Topics for discussion include:

  • Publication pressure and its impact on research environments
  • Common questions and conflicts relating to authorship
  • What is required to qualify for authorship, and how guidelines relate to established practices in different research fields
  • The benefits and drawbacks of publishing, and the responsibilities that come with authorship
  • How junior researchers can navigate disagreements with supervisors or other more senior researchers

The programme will begin with a brief introduction, followed by a panel discussion with members of REDA. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions and share your own reflections.
