Using models to study individual differences in perception and cognition
Abstract
Traditional psychological research often emphasizes group-level analyses to draw general conclusions about human perception and cognition. However, this approach can obscure the individual variability in cognitive strategies, limiting our understanding of how different people process information. This talk will explore how computational models can be leveraged to bridge this gap, allowing for the quantification and analysis of behavioral data at the individual level. By applying model-based approaches, we can capture and interpret the unique cognitive processes that underlie distinct perceptual and cognitive strategies among individuals. I will demonstrate this approach through findings from two studies: one focused on individual differences in perceptual processing and another examining variations in cognitive task performance. These examples illustrate how models can enrich our understanding of human behavior, highlighting the importance of moving beyond group-level effects to appreciate the nuances of individual cognition.
