Welcome to a seminar with Sergio Lo Iacono, senior research assistant at the Department of Sociology, Umeå University, who will present an ongoing project titled:

Making sustainable choices for the next generation

Abstract

Common Pool Resource Dilemmas (CPR) formalize situations where actors can gain wealth through the appropriation of resources from a common pool of resources, which has a certain replenishment rate. If the appropriation rate exceeds the replenishment rate of the common pool, the overall level of resources decreases. Otherwise, if the appropriation rate does not exceed the replenishment rate, the overall level of resources increases or remains stable. The standard result from CPR is that people rapidly exhaust the resources available and deplete the common pool, favoring short-term over long-term gains. We conducted a pre-registered between-subjects (2X2) experiment (N=1,236) evaluating the impact of green option incentives (GI) and awareness of intergenerational transmission (IT) on the emergence of sustainable choices in a discrete CPR. Results show that while GI and/or IT reduce exploitation levels, the mere presence of IT substantially increases the chances of survival of next generations regardless of the existence of green option incentives. This indicates that promoting social responsibility via intergenerational awareness may be more relevant than providing monetary incentives to improve people’s management of common resources for the next generation.
