Restoration futures: Pathways forward with the European Union Nature Restoration Law
Research project
The project builds an interdisciplinary science-to-practice collaboration to examine how the EU Nature Restoration Law can be leveraged to build more sustainable and thriving forested landscapes in Sweden. The Swedish Forest Agency’s central role in devising recommendations to the government for the Nature Restoration Law implementation will provide a direct pathway for impact.
Restoring forests is a key global goal. Under the EU Restoration Regulation (2024), Member States must restore 30% of degraded ecosystems by 2030, 60% by 2040, and 90% by 2050. Our project explores how this can support sustainable forest landscapes in Sweden through interdisciplinary research and collaboration with the Swedish Forest Agency and private owners. We aim to align restoration with local needs, values, and strategies, combining science and practice for a viable forest future.
