Elina is a PhD student in Micael Widerström lab and her research focuses on key questions related to bacterial biofilm and implant-associated infections. Bacterial biofilms are structured microbial communities embedded in an extracellular matrix. Bacteria residing within biofilms present significant challenges for detection using conventional culture methods, as well as for effective antimicrobial treatment.

Within this field, the research focuses on postoperative complications after prosthetic surgery, evaluating diagnostic methods for implant-associated infections, tracking the spread of ST215 Staphylococcus epidermidis, and using single-cell metagenomics and transcriptomics to uncover non-cultivable microorganisms and potential targets for antimicrobial therapy.

In addition to her doctoral research, Elina is employed as a physician at the Infectious Diseases Department at Östersund Hospital.
