Access, security and maintenace of the facilities

The Academy's premises are open to students and staff all days 24/7. According to the University rules, unauthorised persons are not allowed on the school premises between 17:30 and 07:30. This means that you are not allowed to let people in who are not authorised to enter the premises. In the event of a check, everyone is required to show proof of identity to the campus security officers. The UMU card is valid as proof of identity within the University.

Campus security officers can be reached at any time on the University's security number +46 90-786 76 00.

Security

Campus security officers also respond to alarms when necessary. In the evenings and at weekends, campus security officers make rounds of the school to ensure that no unauthorised persons are present.

Campus security officers are present at the Umeå Arts Campus during these hours:

  • Mondays–Thursdays from 20:30–23:00
  • Fridays–Sundays from 21:00–00:30
  • Other public holidays from 21:00–00:30

During these hours, the campus security officers make random checks in the different buildings to ensure everything is alright.

No alcohol in university premises
According to the University's rules for premises, alcohol must not be consumed in university premises.

Cleaning and storage

Keep corridors and escape routes clear
For fire safety reasons, the corridors must not be used for storage. Large paintings may be kept in the corridors if they are placed along one wall only. Designated storage spaces are available on two floors.

There must always be a free passage of at least 90 cm in the corridors, both for evacuation reasons but also to allow the cleaning staff to do their job.

Flammable materials must never be kept in the fire escapes.

Floors and rubbish collection
The Campus Services Office staff clean corridors and shared workspaces. This includes wiping floors and emptying rubbish bins.

Shared responsibility to keep the kitchen tidy
It is everyone's shared responsibility to keep the school kitchen clean. Each class has a fridge and a freezer and also a pantry for storing food.

Restore any surfaces you have used
If you have used a shared space such as the entrance lobby, project spaces, the seminar room and meeting rooms, you should always make sure it is clean and tidy when you leave.

No pets or smoking in the premises

Pets are not allowed on school premises and smoking is only allowed in designated outdoor areas.

Project spaces, studios and workshops

Project spaces

There are a number of project spaces that you can book for a maximum of one week at a time.

Booking of project spaces
You book the project spaces on the booking lists outside the project spaces.

If there is availability, you can extend a booking. Remember to talk to each other to avoid misunderstandings.

If you are not going to use your booked slot, the booking should be cancelled as soon as possible.

If the person who booked the space has not started using the space on the first day of the booking, you are free to use the space, but please check first with the person who booked it.

If you have any questions about booking, please contact the Academy's study administrator or the school's administrative secretary.

Rules for using the project spaces
When you are done in the project space, make sure it is ready to be used by the next person who booked it.

This means that you should:

  • remove all the material you have brought in;
  • clean;
  • paint over stains that do not come out in the cleaning.

You are not allowed to:

  • use tables or chairs from the seminar room in studios or project spaces.
  • attach anything to the windows, as this may cause the glass to crack.

Studio space

The studios are workspaces. They are considered public spaces and cannot be used as living quarters and should not be considered as a private space. No beds or large sofas are allowed. You are responsible for cleaning your studio yourself.

Students are responsible for allocating studio spaces when the autumn semester starts, with input and support from the school's administrative secretary.

You are not allowed to use tables or chairs from the seminar room in studios or project spaces.

You must not attach anything to the windows, as this may cause the glass to crack.

If you are going to study abroad or will go on a long study break, you need to empty your studio to make room for other incoming students.

Workshops

A general introduction to the workshops with a strong focus on safety and environmental impact is given during the first year of the Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts programmes. This is followed by an individual briefing before you are allowed to do independent work at the machines. The school's workshop staff assess the suitability and knowledge of individual students.

Because of the risk of accidents, you must never work alone in the workshops.

The persons in charge of the workshop will inform you about the procedures and rules in each workshop. As a student, you must sign an agreement to comply with the safety regulations in order to work in the workshops. Only students who have been admitted to an ongoing programme and who have undertaken in writing to comply with the safety regulations are allowed to work in the workshops.

The Academy's workshop staff are present in the workshops on a daily basis and therefore have oversight of the work taking place. They continuously monitor the machines and materials and can, based on that, ensure that the work is carried out safely.

Curiosum Makerspace

The Academy has an agreement with Curiosum science centre to use the Makerspace staffed workshops. As a student at the Academy, you have access to their workshops two half days per week. You can either book a workshop or visit a workshop during the drop-in times, subject to availability.

How to access the Curiosum Makerspace

To use the workshops, you need to have completed a Curiosum Makerspace "driving licence" course.
