Checklist for the start of your studies
Before the first day of your education, you need to take some important steps.
1.Your offer
You have been admitted. If you want to keep your place (seat), you do not have to reply to your offer.
If you do not want to keep your place you should decline your offer by logging in to 'My pages' on universityadmissions.se, and follow the instructions. You should click "I wish to decline this offer" next to the course or programme you want to decline.
If you see "Reserve" next to your course or programme in the Notification of selection results, this means that you've been placed on a waiting list for that course/programme.
2.Activate your user account and MFA
As a new student, you need to activate your user account (your UMU-id) approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.
With your user account you can:
- register for courses
- access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
- submit assignments and verify your study results
- access your student e-mail
If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.
Exchange student or tuition fee paying student
If you are an exchange student or tuition fee paying student, you will receive an email with instructions on how to activate your account.
Install MFA for a more secure login
To increase security and reduce the risk of unauthorised access to your information or account, students must enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to log in to various systems, such as Canvas and the Student Web.

3.Course registration
Once you have accepted your place, you must register for the course. For this course, you must log in and register via Ladok before the course starts.
If you know in advance that you will not be able to register during this period, you must notify us. If you suffer from an acute illness or other unforeseen event that prevents you from registering, you must contact us as soon as possible (a medical certificate is required).
If you have been accepted as a reserve after registration has closed, you must contact the course's study administrator so that we can register you manually. Notify Study Administrator Linda Forsell Email: linda.forsell@umu.se
In order to register for the course, you must first activate your Umu-id.

Please note that the course call is mandatory, it is very important to notify the course coordinator if you cannot attend the call.
About the course:
The course is about how physiological signals are measured and analyzed in healthcare and medical research, specifically the following areas are covered: Signal theory; Pressure measurement; Flow measurement; Movement and force measurements; Temperature and heat flow measurements; Bioelectrical and biomagnetic measurement techniques; Chemical measurement techniques. The teaching is campus-based and is conducted in the form of lectures and seminars as well as supervised laboratory exercises and demonstrations. Participation in demonstrations and laboratory exercises is mandatory. The course consists of 2 modules: a theory part (4.5 credits) which is examined with a written exam (U/G/VG) and a laboratory part (3 credits) which is examined with written laboratory reports and oral presentation (U/G). The entire course is given one of the grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with Distinction (VG). To be approved for the entire course, all exams and mandatory modules must be approved. The grade is based on the grade obtained in module 1 and is only given when all mandatory modules have been approved.

Everyone who is admitted to the course has access to the course information on Canvas until the registration period ends, after which only registered students have access.
It is important that you take advantage of this information and receive updates, e.g. regarding changes to the schedule, as quickly as possible. Therefore, make sure that a correct email address is linked to your user, and if you do not check that address regularly, arrange for it to be forwarded to another email address.

The book is available to borrow as an e-book via the university library (https://search.ub.umu.se/permalink/46UMEA_INST/1v5n3j5/alma9921347576904996); you can read it online or download chapters in pdf format (not the whole book).
If you want to download the whole book you need to install Adobe Digital Editions (see instructions in the link), which will give you access to the book offline for 21 days (at a time). You can create an Adobe account to read the book on multiple devices (computer/phone etc) or choose "authorise without id" to use just one device. Additional material will be distributed during lectures or via canvas.
