Checklist for the start of your studies
Before the first day of your education, you need to take some important steps.
1.Reply to your offer
If you have been admitted to a course or programme, or been placed on a waiting list, you must reply to your first admissions notification to keep your place. If you don't wish to keep your place, you should decline your offer. In doing so, you free up your place to someone who is on the waiting list. You reply to your offer by logging in to your account at Universityadmissions.se by 20 july 2026.
2.Activate your user account and MFA
As a new student, you need to activate your user account (your UMU-id) approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.
With your user account you can:
- register for courses
- access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
- submit assignments and verify your study results
- access your student e-mail
If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.
Exchange student or tuition fee paying student
If you are an exchange student or tuition fee paying student, you will receive an email with instructions on how to activate your account.
Install MFA for a more secure login
To increase security and reduce the risk of unauthorised access to your information or account, students must enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to log in to various systems, such as Canvas and the Student Web.

If you are having problems activating your account or logging in, please contact our Servicedesk. You will find answers to common questions, and can submit enquiries.
3.Course registration
When you have replied to the Notification of Selection Results, you must register. Registration takes place at the start of the course, between 24 august - 2 september. If you have not registered in due time you may lose your place.
By registering, you state that you intend to take part in the course. You must be registered in the Ladok student registry to be allowed to take the course and to get your results recorded during the course.
If you already know that you will not be able to register during this period, you must notify us before the registration deadline.

About the course
This course in Extreme Exercise Physiology is designed as a mix of distance and campus-based teaching that includes compulsory on campus classes (four throughout the course). Since these meetings are mandatory it means that you need to attend them in order to complete and obtain a passing grade for the class. You course is also given within the Master's Programme in Sports Medicine with Specialisation Exercise Physiology, thus you will meet and work together with those students.
During the course introduction, we will provide you with all relevant information regarding the course and with a special focus on the preparations for the first course meeting including the trip to the Swedish mountains.
Campus-based teaching 1: 17–23 September 2026, 13:00–15:00
- We will start with two days in Umeå where we will introduce the written assignment in a workshop and practise the field tests that we will be using during the stay in Ammarnäs.
- Teaching between 19 and 23 September will take place in Ammarnäs (Swedish mountains). Travel to and shared accommodation (2–4 students per unit) in Ammarnäs will be provided by the University.
- The meeting will be focused on data collections, lab work and practical examinations.
Campus-based teaching 2: 13–16 January 2027, 09:00–16:00
- The meeting will be focused on an examining seminar on ultra endurance races during wintertime and a workshop related to training principles
Campus-based teaching 3: 15-19 March 2027 (dates are preliminary)
- The meeting will be focused on a written exam and a practical workshop on hypothermia (cold water immersion)
Campus-based teaching 4: 26–27 MAY 2027 (dates are preliminary)
- The meeting will be focused on an examining seminar on ultra distance races during summertime
Canvas – Your Digital Classroom
Most of your studies will take place remotely, yet you will stay closely connected to the course. Expect to join daytime online activities on a regular basis throughout the semesters, for example seminars, workshops, tutorials, and lectures. You will collaborate with classmates on group assignments and presentations and provide peer feedback on one another’s work. The course uses a flipped-classroom design: you review materials beforehand and then meet live for discussion and problem-solving. This blended format offers flexibility while deepening learning through active engagement.
Various types of online meetings, most often via Zoom, are centre pieces in the teaching throughout the course. To make this work well, you will need access to a computer that is no more than 4–5 years old, a webcam, and a headset. An internet connection is required, preferably a stable wireless or wired connection via network cable.
Canvas is your digital classroom where you will stay in contact with your teachers and fellow students during the course. You will find everything you need regarding the courses in Canvas. You can also discuss things with your instructor and classmates there.
You can log in to Canvas after you have activated your UMU-id, and closer to the start of the semester, you will also gain access to the course site. Please log in to Canvas at least one week prior to the start of the course. There will be reading assignments and recorded lectures as a preparation for the first Campus-based teaching.
On the course site in Canvas, you will find the self-study materials you need, such as recorded lectures, study questions, reading guides and information on campus-based teaching. Certain scheduled exams and other activities may also take place there.
Meetings via Zoom
In this program, we often use Zoom as a digital tool for online teaching and meetings. Here is a guide to the most common functions in Zoom. As a student you create an account and log in with your UMU-id.
