Checklist for the start of your studies
Before the first day of your education, you need to take some important steps.
1.Reply to your offer
If you have been admitted to a course or programme, or been placed on a waiting list, you must reply to your first admissions notification to keep your place. If you don't wish to keep your place, you should decline your offer. In doing so, you free up your place to someone who is on the waiting list. You reply to your offer by logging in to your account at Universityadmissions.se by 20 july 2026.
2.Activate your user account and MFA
As a new student, you need to activate your user account (your UMU-id) approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.
With your user account you can:
- register for courses
- access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
- submit assignments and verify your study results
- access your student e-mail
If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.
Exchange student or tuition fee paying student
If you are an exchange student or tuition fee paying student, you will receive an email with instructions on how to activate your account.
Install MFA for a more secure login
To increase security and reduce the risk of unauthorised access to your information or account, students must enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to log in to various systems, such as Canvas and the Student Web.

3.Course registration
Once you have accepted your place on the course, you must register for it. For this course, you are required to register yourself in Ladok before the course starts. Self-registration is open from 23 September until September 30.
If you know in advance that you will not be able to register during this period, you must notify us before the final registration date. If you have been admitted to the course but have previously been registered for it, you must contact the course administrator in order to register. Please notify administrator Anna Henriksson.

About the course
This course deals with the complex relationship between gender and law. With feminist legal theory as a starting point, the course will discuss if and when the law can be used as a tool for accomplishing gender equality. This is done by addressing questions such as why there is a difference between law in books and law in action, and what consequences the gendered nature of law has had and still have for those trying to use law for securing their rights.
The course starts with introductory lectures, followed by different thematic approaches to gender and law. During the course, you will take part in learning activities such as lectures and mandatory assignments. The studies are characterized by a high degree of independent and active search for knowledge.
The course is a full-time online course in English. The course is taught entirely through the learning management system Canvas as well as through Zoom. The course is structured around (non-mandatory) lectures, as well as mandatory seminars. During the seminars, you are expected to prepare yourself thoroughly according to the seminar instructions, as well as participate actively in the discussions during the seminars.

Mandatory
Please note that the book is available as an online resource through Umeå University’s library web page. In addition to the book, a number of articles and texts related to the seminars will be distributed via the course learning platform.
Examination
Examination takes place through the fulfilment of the following two parts:
Fulfilment of mandatory assignments during the course (awarded with either the grade Fail (U) or Pass(G))
An individual written assignment (awarded with either Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG)).
A passing grade on the activities under part 1-2 above are required to receive a passing grade for the entire course. On the entire course, the grades given are Fail (U), Pass (G) and Pass with Distinction (VG). The grade for the course as a whole is based on the result of the individual written assignment and awarded after the completion of all compulsory course elements.
A student who has not received a passing grade on a test will be afforded an opportunity for re-examination. A student who has passed examination may not be re-examined.
Please note that a student who has been accepted and registered for the course has the right to teaching and guidance only during the term/academic year when he/she was accepted and registered.

Course participation
Three weeks after the course has started, we are required to verify which students are still activ on the course. This check will take place in the learning platform Canvas, where you will confirm your active participation. Further information about this will be provided in Canvas when the time comes.
If you do not respond, or if you indicate that you are not actively participating in the course, your registration will be withdrawn.
If, later during the course, you decide that you no longer wish to continue, please inform the course coordinator and register your withdrawal in Ladok, or contact your course administrator who can assist you.
