Welcome to your studies!

You have been accepted to the course Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Ultrasound at Umeå University. Here you will find all the information you need before starting your studies. A warm welcome to the course – we hope you have a wonderful and rewarding time studying with us here at Umeå University!

Checklist for the start of your studies

Before the first day of your education, you need to take some important steps.

1.Your offer

You have been admitted. If you want to keep your place (seat), you do not have to reply to your offer.

If you do not want to keep your place you should decline your offer by logging in to 'My pages' on universityadmissions.se, and follow the instructions. You should click "I wish to decline this offer" next to the course or programme you want to decline.

If you see "Reserve" next to your course or programme in the Notification of selection results, this means that you've been placed on a waiting list for that course/programme.

2.Activate your user account and MFA

As a new student, you need to activate your user account (your UMU-id) approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

With your user account you can:

  • register for courses
  • access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
  • submit assignments and verify your study results
  • access your student e-mail

If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

Exchange student or tuition fee paying student

If you are an exchange student or tuition fee paying student, you will receive an email with instructions on how to activate your account.

Install MFA for a more secure login

To increase security and reduce the risk of unauthorised access to your information or account, students must enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to log in to various systems, such as Canvas and the Student Web.

Help! It´s not working

If you are having problems activating your account or logging in, please contact our Servicedesk. You will find answers to common questions, and can submit enquiries.

3.Course registration

For this course, you must register yourself in LADOK before the course starts.

If you know in advance that you will not be able to register, you must notify us.

If you suffer from an acute illness or other unforeseen event that means you cannot register, you must contact us as soon as possible (a medical certificate is required).

In order to register for the course, you must first activate your Umu-id.

4.Course start

Start date

2026-09-01

Time

13.15

Place Marmorsalen
Schedule Go to the schedule for HT2026

The schedule is preliminary until four weeks before the course starts

Please note that the course call is mandatory, it is very important to notify the course coordinator if you cannot attend the call.

Course content, components and exams:

The course begins with nuclear spin resonance physics, how nuclear spin can be manipulated and detected and how this can be used to create an imaging system - magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The technical structure of the imaging system and the function of main components such as the main magnet, gradients and the RF system are then studied.

Deviations from the ideal function of the system components and their effects are studied to provide an understanding of common artifacts and tools to deal with them. The course also covers image reconstruction, the structure of pulse sequences and their importance for the contrast in the images.

The most important groups of MRI sequences such as gradient-echo and spin-echo sequences are treated in greater detail, while more specialized sequences that enable measurements of diffusion, chemical composition and flow, for example, are studied more generally. Techniques for speeding up image acquisition are also covered. Finally, an introduction to ultrasound imaging technology is given. Here, the physical principles behind the technology and how the imaging system is structured are discussed.

Generation of ultrasound, pulse echo methods and Doppler technology are also studied. The course consists of two parts where the theory part (6 hp) is examined via a written classroom exam and a laboratory part (1.5 hp) is examined via laboratory reports.

After completing the course, students are expected to be able to:

Detailedly explain the physics that underlies MRI. Detailedly explain the most important components of the magnetic resonance imaging system, their function, limitations and impact on image quality.

Detailedly explain how MRI raw data is structured and how images can be created from raw data. Detailedly explain different classes of sequences and their structure, their areas of application, strengths and weaknesses, and significance for image contrast and signal-to-noise ratio. Be familiar with the most common artifacts and the underlying causes of these. Be familiar with different techniques for speeding up MRI imaging, the principles for these and critically examine the pros and cons of different techniques.

Explain the physics underlying ultrasound imaging and how it is used to create images. Know the most common artifacts in ultrasound diagnostics, their underlying causes and how they can be minimized. Independently use the Bloch equations to quantitatively describe how spin magnetization behaves in an MRI scanner. Identify and reduce artifacts. Independently calculate how a sequence should be designed for the desired contrast, resolution, image size and signal-to-noise ratio. Demonstrate basic skills in using a clinical MRI scanner. Assess and evaluate risks with MRI.

Evaluate appropriate sequence choices based on requirements for, for example, contrast. Make relevant assessments in choosing ultrasound probes and settings given requirements for penetration depth, resolution and contrast.

All communication with students during the course takes place via Canvas.

Once you have registered for the course, you will have access to the course information on Canvas.

It is important that you take note of this information, if you do not use your university email account it is important that you arrange for forwarding to another email address.

The course is given in English.

The course you are going to take is given by the Department of Diagnostics and Intervention.
