Checklist for the start of your studies
Before the first day of your education, you need to take some important steps.
1.Your offer
You have been admitted. If you want to keep your place (seat), you do not have to reply to your offer.
If you do not want to keep your place you should decline your offer by logging in to 'My pages' on universityadmissions.se, and follow the instructions. You should click "I wish to decline this offer" next to the course or programme you want to decline.
If you see "Reserve" next to your course or programme in the Notification of selection results, this means that you've been placed on a waiting list for that course/programme.
2.Activate your user account and MFA
As a new student, you need to activate your user account (your UMU-id) approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.
With your user account you can:
- register for courses
- access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
- submit assignments and verify your study results
- access your student e-mail
If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.
Exchange student or tuition fee paying student
If you are an exchange student or tuition fee paying student, you will receive an email with instructions on how to activate your account.
Install MFA for a more secure login
To increase security and reduce the risk of unauthorised access to your information or account, students must enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to log in to various systems, such as Canvas and the Student Web.

Help! It´s not working
If you are having problems activating your account or logging in, please contact our Servicedesk. You will find answers to common questions, and can submit enquiries.
3.Programme registration
For programme courses in the autumn semester, you must self-register in Ladok for students before the semester starts. Self-registration is open from 24 to 31 August. It is essential that you complete your self-registration during this period in order to keep your place on the programme.
Please note that you must activate your user account (UMU ID) and install MFA before you can log in to Ladok and register for programme courses.
If for any reason you are unable to attend the programme, it is important that you inform us as soon as possible by emailing info.arch@umu.se.
4.Programme start
Introduction meeting and attendance check
The Master's Programme starts with an introduction meeting at 09:00 on Monday 31 August, together with the Programme Director. The meeting will take place in the Auditorium at the Umeå School of Architecture.
If you for some reason cannot attend the introduction meeting, it is important that you notify us in advance by sending an email to info.arch@umu.se.
Later that day, we will meet at 13:00 in the Theatre for a joint information session for students in years 2–5. Attendance is important.
Welcome meeting for new international students - 28 August
We would like to welcome all new international students to an information meeting at the Umeå School of Architecture as part of the Orientation.
The meeting will take place at 10:00 on Friday 28 August, the week before the semester starts. It will provide useful information ahead of the semester about studying in Umeå, the programme structure, registration, and other practical matters. We will meet in the Auditorium.
Vertical Workshop
The semester starts off with a one-week joint workshop for students and teachers at the School of Architecture. Each year we explore a current issue relating to aspects of sustainability and the local context.
The workshop is an important part of the school's collaboration with other institutions and the surrounding community. It is also a good opportunity for students to get to know each other, the school and the city. This year's theme will be presented on the first day of the semester.
Studio selection
During the first week of the semester, you will select the studio you will work with during the autumn semester. The studio system is a teaching model that is based on students working together with a team of teachers on a specific research area in Architecture and Urban Design. The studios include students from more than one year. More information about our studios and the selection process will be provided at the start of the semester during the introductory meeting and on the Canvas site, which will be published at that time.
Learning platform Canvas
We use the learning platform Canvas. The programme course sites in Canvas will be published a few days before the semester starts. Please note that you must activate your user account (UMU ID) and install MFA before you can log in to Canvas.
Schedule
Before the semester starts, an overall schedule for the first weeks will be published further up this page under point 4, Programme start.
Materials for your upcoming studies
Tools and materials that you may need in your education will we go into more in detail by the start of the programme, but it is good to bring your own pencils, scissors, ruler and sketch pads for the first days already. It can be good to know that approximately the same amount that students on other programmes are expected to spend on literature, are at the Architecture programme distributed over the semester on travelling, materials, tools and literature.
The education structure
The education mainly consists of project work with supervision, in groups or individually. The school is equipped with a wood workshop, laser cutter, 3D printer and computer rooms and you will have your own workplace in the school's studio - where you can expect to spend a lot of study time. The focus is on practical work in the workshop and studio, where you learn to create drawings and models. Courses in, among other things, architectural theory, history, technology are combined with project work and run in parallel during the semesters. Many lectures are given by internationally professional architects, artists and researchers.
About Umeå School of Architecture
We are pleased that you have chosen to study at the Umeå School of Architecture (UMA). We hope that you will find that you have made the right choice in gaining the skills you need for the future. We also hope that you enjoy your time and studies at Umeå University!
Umeå School of Architecture is a department of The Faculty for Science and Technology at Umeå University, established in 2009. Since 2010 the school is located in its own building at Umeå Arts Campus with Umeå School of Design, Umeå Academy of Fine Arts and the museum for contemporary art Bildmuseet as closest neighbours.
For Umeå School of Architecture, holistic, interdisciplinary and experimental approaches are perceived decisive to address the contemporary global challenges and possibilities of Architecture such as climate change, rising inequalities, environmental devastation, different geographical living conditions and migration. The lack of institutional history brings an open, curious and sensitive atmosphere that tends to amplify such approaches. Likewise, the location of Umeå School of Architecture in the local- and regional context of Umeå and Northern Sweden is, together with the school's International profile a dynamic vantage point to address global or structural issues while working firmly to engage with and learn from affected communities.
Umeå School of Architecture has around 50 employees with an academic and professional background in almost as many different contexts and approximately 320 students from all over the world. UMA provides education in the form of a five-year Architecture Programme, a two-year Master's Programme in Architecture and Urban Design and also a couple of summer courses.
