Contents

The course provides students with the opportunity to apply a scientific approach by independently planning, formulating, and critically analyzing problems within the field of Informatics, with a specialization in Digital Management and Innovation. The course includes the selection of a research topic, formulation of a research problem, research questions and delimitations, as well as the design and execution of a study and the completion of an academic thesis. The thesis is presented and defended in a seminar.

Expected learning outcomes

Regarding knowledge and understanding the student is, after the course, expected to be able to:
1. Demonstrate broad knowledge of the subject area as well as in-depth knowledge within a defined sub-area, and critically position their own work in relation to relevant research
2. Demonstrate advanced methodological understanding by justifying and critically reflecting on choices of research design, methods, and analytical approach

Regarding proficiency and aptitude, the student is after the module, expected to be able to:
3. Critically formulate a researchable question that addresses a relevant knowledge problem
4. Design, plan, and conduct a scientific study using appropriate methods within given time frames.
5. Analyze empirical material in a methodologically sound manner and draw well-supported conclusions.
6. Contribute to knowledge development by developing, refining, or problematizing existing research in relation to the findings of their own study
7. Critically evaluate the quality of scientific work, including its methodological strengths and limitations.

Regarding evaluative capacity and approach the student is, after the module, expected to be able to:
8. Make research ethical assessments in relation to their own work and critically reflect on its possibilities, limitations, and implications for further knowledge development.

Form of instruction

Learning is supported mainly by supervision sessions, but the course may also include lectures and seminars. Some teaching sessions may be compulsory. If the course so requires, necessary computer applications may be provided and introduced. During the course students are free to use the departmental computer labs. Teaching is normally done in English. Good writing skills and good knowledge of the English language are important in order to be able to complete the course.

Examination modes

The examination modes applied are written assignment and seminar. The grading scale for the course is Pass with distinction (VG), Pass (G), and Fail (U).

Students who do not pass the exams during the course will be given a second opportunity soon afterwards. Students who do not pass after these two attempts have the possibility to complete remaining assignments during subsequent re-exam periods.

A student who has failed twice on a course, or part of a course, is entitled to ask for another examiner, unless there are special reasons for denial. Requests for new examiners are made to the Director of Studies.

If special reasons exist, the examiner has the right to decide on another examination form.

Other regulations

The thesis must be written by two authors together. It is not possible for two students to co-author a thesis project at different levels (eg bachelor's and master's level). Supervision of the thesis is only guaranteed for the duration of the course and for registered students.
