I have been admitted to the programme, but I do not want to start until next year. What should I do? How do I decline my place?
If you have a valid reasons, you can apply for deferment of the start of the programme. For international tuition fee payaing students deferment is possible only if the residence permit is granted. Delay of residence permit is not a valid reason for deferment. Special reasons, such as military service and parental leave can be a base for granted deferment. Decline your place by responding to the admissions decision at universityadmissions.se or antagning.se. If it is too late to respond there, you can email the department (lifescience.chemistry@umu.se) and let them know that you want to decline your place. You are welcome to apply to the programme again next year.
I am on the waiting list. What are my chances of being admitted?
No one can predict your chances of being admitted, regardless of your waiting-list position. If you submitted your application before the application deadline, selection is made on the grounds stated on the programme webpage, usually upper-secondary grades and the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test. If you submitted a late application, your application is placed in order based on date, and you can only be admitted if places remain after all in-time applications have been processed.
International applicants who need to apply for residence permit to come to Sweden: Please note, that even if you have been offer a place from the waiting list, the chances are very low that you can start the program due to the residence permit application processing time. We recommend that you decline your place and consider a new application for the next admission round. It is important that you apply for the international (first) round of applications (see dates and deadlines on universityadmissions.se)
There are 40 places on the programme. We admit more students than the number of places, which means that some admitted students must decline their offers before we will call any students on the waiting list. Read more here: https://www.umu.se/en/student/new-students/frequently-asked-questions/

Please note that these are figures from previous years. Admission scores for upcoming years depend on how many people apply and the qualifications of the applicants.
Programme students who will continue in the programme
Remember that you must accept your admissions decision! Even if you have been included in group application by the department, you still need to accept the admissions decision — otherwise you risk losing your place!

How do I respond to the admissions decision, if I applied to the first year of the programme?
Applicants in the second admission round, who get their notification 10 July, need to reply to their offer: Log in to www.universityadmissions.se to accept or decline your place. Applicants in the first admission round, who received their admissions reslut earlier in the spring, don't need to reply to their offer. However, if you decided to not start the program, please inform us as soon as possible via lifescience.chemistry@umu.se

I forgot to accept the admissions decision or accidentally declined my programme courses. What should I do?
This applies only to applicants who get their notification 10 July: If you have applied for the program and it is still open for late application, you can apply again via University Admissions: https://www.universityadmissions.se/en/ Late applications (after the final application date) are handled subject to availability, after all applications submitted before the deadline.
The University cannot change your reply. When you declined the place, it will be offered to someone else. If the application is still open, you can submit a late application in order to have a chance of being admitted if places are available.
If you are a program student continuing your studies and forgot to accpet your admission to the program courses, contact the department by the end of August, before the course starts, and we will try to help.
How do I register for a course?
Accepting your offer is NOT the same as registering for your courses. Registration for the first course of the semester takes place in connection with the start of the semester. Follow the instructions in the welcome information for the programme.

How do I re-register for a course?
You should not re-register if you are only going to take a re-exam. In that case, you only need to register for the exam, at least 10 working days before the exam date. Read more here: https://www.umu.se/en/student/your-studies/examinations-and-assessments/if-you-need-to-retake-an-exam/
A student who has no results at all entered in Ladok for the course for which they wish to re-register must apply for the course via University Admissions: https://www.universityadmissions.se/en/ In the selection process, the selection rules in Umeå University’s admission regulations are then applied. A student admitted in this way must be re-registered in Ladok.
A student who has one or more results entered in Ladok for the course for which they wish to re-register must apply for re-registration to the relevant department. The student must be re-registered if there is a place available on the course after the waiting list admission process has been completed. If there are more applicants than available places, selection must be made according to priority order based on the date the application was received.

Where can I find my schedule? When does the first course start? In which room?
The schedule is preliminary until four weeks before the course starts. Find and read the welcome information for your programme. What should I do if I cannot attend the first meeting?
Course registration takes place at the first lecture during the roll call. If you are unable to attend the registration and introduction, you risk losing your place on the programme. Therefore, you need to contact the study counsellor in advance at lifescience.chemistry@umu.se, and we will see what we can do. Always include your full name and complete course name in the message if you send an email.
Do I need to attend all laboratory sessions?
All laboratory sessions are mandatory. If you miss a mandatory session, you must complete the laboratory work at a later date.
Depending on the type of laboratory session, an additional make-up session may be offered during the academic year. However, some laboratory sessions cannot be arranged separately for individual students. In such cases, you may need to wait until the course is offered again the following year to complete the required work.
If the course is a prerequisite for subsequent courses in the programme, missing a laboratory session may delay your studies and affect your ability to continue in the programme as planned.
I have already completed certain courses/part of the programme. How can I get a transfer of credits?
Only admitted and registered students can apply for transfer of credits.
Start by reviewing the course syllabi for the courses in the programme yourself and comparing them with the courses you have taken. After that, you can submit an application for transfer of credits stating which completed courses should form the basis for transfer of credits for specified courses in the programme. To ensure that everything proceeds smoothly and as quickly as possible, it is important that you submit a complete application, including a transcript of records, course syllabi, and any laboratory manuals for the courses you have taken previously. The processing time is approximately 60 days. If additional information is required, it may take longer before a decision can be made. If the course you want to receive credit for begins before you receive a decision on your transfer-of-credits application, you are recommended to start the course and continue taking it until you know for certain that your application has been approved.
If your transfer of credits concerns the first course in the programme, also contact the course coordinator for more information. You cannot receive a preliminary assessment from the study counsellor or the department. You will receive the decision from the Degrees Office.

How do I register for the exam?
Do not forget to register no later than 10 working days before the exam date! If you have not registered on time, you will not be able to take the exam.
If you are taking the exam on site in Umeå, you register via Ladok for students.
Have I registered for the exam?
If you have registered for an exam via Ladok, you can see your registration in Ladok for students. When you register for an exam via Forms, you receive a confirmation by email. Check your spam folder in case the confirmation has ended up there.
If you have not received any confirmation, contact the responsible department well in advance before exam registration closes (for chemistry courses, contact the Student Office at the Department of Chemistry by emailing svl.chem@umu.se; for molecular biology courses contact studieadm.molbiol@umu.se).
Educational support during examinations
This applies to you if you have a NAIS decision on educational support.
For educational support during an examination that will be written on site in Umeå: You apply in Ladok for educational support for the examination when registering for the examination.
For educational support during an examination that will be written in another location: You need to check with the examination venue yourself whether they can offer the support you have in your NAIS decision. You must first have submitted the NAIS decision to the department.

When will the exam be corrected?
No later than 15 working days after the exam has been completed, the result must be made available to students, for example, through Canvas. Students should use their assigned code to identify their result. No later than 20 working days after the exam has been completed, the result must be reported in Ladok. Students can view their results by logging into Ladok for Students.
I have questions about re-exams in August
Any questions regarding re-exams should be directed to the responsible department. You register for all exams in Ladok for students.
Please note that registration for exams closes 10 working days before the exam. After that, it will no longer be possible to register for the exam. You will not be able to take the exam if you have not registered for it.

Graded exams in chemistry can be collected at the Student Office at the Department of Chemistry during its opening hours.

I did not pass my exam. What should I do?
Register for the re-examination via the link on the programme's/course's page in Canvas, no later than ten working days before the date of the exam.
Consider whether there may be particular reasons why you did not pass the exam.
Do you need tips on how you can study more effectively? See the tips under the question about study habits below. Have you been able to devote enough time to your studies? The programme assumes that you can devote about 40 hours per week to your studies.
If you feel that you are falling behind in your studies, contact the study counsellor on the programme to discuss different ways forward.

At Umeå University, there are both general and programme-specific study counsellors. If you do not know which study counsellor to contact, you can start with the general counsellors, who can guide you further in many different matters. To get in touch with a programme study counsellor connected to the Bachelor Programme in Life Science, search for "Department of Chemistry" on this page: https://www.umu.se/en/student/study-guidance/ and contact either the one at the Department of Molecular Biology or the one at the Department of Chemistry.
The Student Offices at both the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology are closed during the holiday/vacation periods, and therefore there are longer response times for all sorts of questions. We will do our best to help you find the answers you need. Many questions about re-registration and admission of students on the waiting list cannot be answered until later in August or at the start of the semester. Therefore, first look for your answer on our FAQ webpage and in the welcome information for your course/programme, and contact us in August if your question still remains at that time.
