Work requiring an animal experimentation ethics permit

If your degree project includes experimental studies in the laboratory or in the field where you handle and/or manipulate vertebrates, an ethical permit for animal experiments from the Animal Experimentation Ethics Board is needed.

Degree projects

The supervisor and the course coordinator are responsible to ensure that such a permit exists and that the permit is valid for the type of study being conducted. Furthermore, you as a student need to have completed the national animal welfare courses in ethics and legislation and a specific course for the animal group that you are studying. These courses are available as web-based courses. The supervisor and the course coordinator are also responsible for ensuring that a practical handling element is carried out for the relevant animal group you are studying in order to pass the specific animal group course. International students who have an equivalent certificate from another country must supplement this by taking the sections on ethics and Swedish legislation.

To attend the courses, contact the responsible person for animal welfare at the Department of Ecology and Environmental Sciences, Pär Byström. You will then receive personal login details to complete the course. After passing the online courses and provided a certificate with learned practical components in the animal group course you will receive a course certificate. Approved course certificates must be available before you start the practical work on the degree project.

In the written degree thesis, it must be stated that the study has an ethical permit including the registration number for the permit and the name of the permit holder.

For more information and questions contact Pär Byström.
