gema final concept.
gema
gema combines a wearable device with a reflective digital platform to foster emotional awareness and shared understanding. By capturing biosignals like heart rate and skin conductance throughout the day and intimate moments, the system helps users observe their arousal patterns and emotional states. Through guided sessions and rituals, gema encourages partners to slow down, express their feelings, and co-create new forms of intimacy grounded in presence rather than performance. The result is both a product and an invitation. gema proposes a softer, more intentional relationship with ourselves and with others, where design becomes a tool for reflection and transformation. At its heart, the project asks: what if we did things… with love?
Background
This project began with a question about pleasure imbalance: Why is there still such an emotional and physical disparity in our most intimate moments? The project was sparked by the concept of the orgasm gap, a term that describes the difference in orgasm frequency between men and women during heterosexual sex, where 91% of men reach orgasm compared to only 39% of women. As the design journey unfolded, supported by interviews with sex therapists and focus groups with individuals and couples, it became clear that the issue goes beyond physical pleasure. It reveals a deeper gap in how we communicate, listen, and connect. Beneath the data lies something more profound: a reflection on what remains unsaid, untouched, and unknown, both in others and within ourselves.
