Two size versions – One for home and one for on the go
Inclusive skincare
For many people, a simple skincare routine can become a moment of frustration. While skincare is often associated with wellbeing and self-care, the interaction with most packaging assumes full grip strength, dexterity, and the use of two hands. For many users, this turns a simple routine into a moment of frustration or dependence. BRIYO is a refillable skincare packaging concept designed to improve accessibility for people with reduced hand mobility. Reimagining how skincare can be handled and applied, enabling one-handed use, reducing effort, and improving control. By separating interaction from application, the design creates a calmer and more intuitive experience. Restoring the skincare experience. Making it simple, controlled, and personal again. BRIYO avoids the typical language of assistive products. Instead, it is designed to feel like something you would choose, familiar, desirable, and aligned with contemporary skincare. More than a functional solution, the project highlights how inclusive design can restore ease, control, and dignity in everyday moments. Because self-care should feel the same for everyone
Project Information
This bachelor’s thesis explores how inclusive design can be applied to skincare packaging, focusing on users with reduced hand mobility. Instead of focusing on a single diagnosis, this project considers a form of disability that any of us might encounter—temporarily or permanently—at different stages of life.
The skincare market continues to grow and emphasises experience, personalization, and wellbeing. However, most packaging solutions still rely on standard interactions that exclude many users. This project identifies a gap where product experience and accessibility do not align.
By integrating accessibility directly into the design, the project positions inclusive design as a way to improve usability for a wider audience, rather than as a niche solution.
Method
Through user-driven insights and an iterative design process, BRIYO reimagines how skincare can be handled and applied. User insights were gathered through: interviews with individuals with reduced hand mobility, discussions with occupational therapists, and observations of interactions with existing packaging.
The process included multiple feedback loops with users, where both functional performance and emotional perception were evaluated.
Outcome
The outcome is BRIYO, a skincare packaging concept that supports independent and comfortable use through a simplified and intuitive interaction.
The concept introduces a stable, ergonomic form combined with a low-effort pump mechanism that enables one-handed use and controlled dosing. By separating interaction from application and integrating refill functionality, the design reduces physical strain while supporting both independence and sustainability.
Beyond function, the design focuses on how the product is perceived. Rather than appearing as an assistive device, BRIYO is a product that feels both accessible and desirable. Aligning with the visual language of premium skincare, soft, balanced, and approachable.
BRIYO demonstrates how inclusive design can transform everyday routines into more accessible, enjoyable, and dignified experiences, highlighting the potential to rethink product interaction beyond traditional assumptions.
