Kjäll-Åvan - Sustainable food storage

Degree Project 2026

The project explored how people store food in their homes and how they can be prepared for a possible crisis where we may have to manage without electricity or access to buy food for at least a week. The focus of the project has been to create food storage that supports individuals in everyday life and in times of crisis and that can be integrated into the home without replacing existing kitchens. The process has followed the Double Diamond design process, which involved a process of four parts: Discover, Defi nition, Development and Deliver. The project started with research, study visits and interviews. The collected material was then analyzed and used to defi ne the direction of the project. This led to concept development through idea generation and sketching, which was evaluated and developed into a result in consultation with both users and experts. The result is Kjäll-Åvan – a modular food storage solution and challenging the defi nition of where and what a kitchen is. A concept that supports people in everyday life, parties and crises by offering temperature-adapted food storage outdoors.
