Social night
In August 2025, SJ passengers saved 41,770 tonnes of CO2 compared to car travel (SJ, 2025). Sustainable transport is vital for climate goals, but trains face issues like delays and poor onboard conditions, causing customer dissatisfaction (Ahlberg, 2025; Svenskt Kvalitetsindex, 2025). On top of this, long-distance train travel struggles against air travel’s lower prices and faster journeys. But there are glimpses of hope: Night trains offer potential in time-efficiency, yet concerns about security and sharing compartments with strangers remain. Social Night examines how design could improve that by 2050 – as a result hopefully reducing emissions and bridging social communities. A thorough, user-focused approach was employed to broadly explore ways in which long-distance train travel could become more appealing. This involved gathering insights from actual travellers in various ages and gaining firsthand experience. The emphasis was placed on enhancing safety and social predictability in night trains, while maintaining the enjoyable aspect of meeting fellow travellers. The project explores a new form of overnight travel that sits between state-of-the-art private sleeping pods, such as MiniCabins in the ÖBB NightJet (Eurail, n.d.), and traditional shared compartments. The final proposal presents a strategic overnight train compartment concept, aimed at improving user experience. A digital matching service is offered before departure for good compartment companionship, and the two-deck interior has distinct social and sleeping areas to ensure privacy as needed. As a bonus for the project’s relevance, Sweden’s Trafikverket plans to introduce new night trains in northern Sweden by 2030 (Trafikverket, 2025).
