Thresholds of Return: A women’s recovery center lowering thresholds, making big steps feel smaller

Bachelor’s Degree Project 2026

Thresholds of Return is a recovery center for female victims of domestic abuse, addressing the gap between emergency shelter and independent life, a transition currently left unsupported. Existing support systems are often experienced as institutional in their spatial organization, with abrupt transitions between private and shared spaces. To counter this, the project is spatially developed with the intention to offer residents the freedom to choose their level of social engagement, both within the building and in relation to society.

The project is situated at Fabriksgatan in Umeå, a site chosen for its balance between urban connection and residential tranquillity. The design process was supported by interviews with Umeå’s Kvinnojour and a visit to their residential facilities, which provided insight into the spatial needs and priorities.

A crucial part of the site strategy was to design a building that blends into its surroundings, allowing the women to recover in plain sight without attracting attention. The facade facing the main street is therefore carefully adapted to match the neighbouring buildings. In contrast, the opposite facade creates a more dynamic outdoor environment with its recessed niches allowing the residents to be outside without being visible from the cross-street.

While the outside is intentionally kept typical, the interior strategy is far from conventional. With the objective of breaking away from institutional norms, Thresholds of Return redirects power and autonomy to the women. The project provides a space encouraging social exploration and trust to be regained on their terms. It is organized as a vertical landscape of intersecting levels, where the spatial sequence gradually moves from private, semi-private, to shared areas.

Moreover, art therapy is integrated as a program for residents to process their emotions. The artwork can later be sold at a publicly accessible art shop located in the existing neighbouring building. The spatial design and overlapping programs offer residents the freedom to regulate their level of social engagement, both within the building and in relation to society.

All together, Thresholds of Return creates a framework where recovery does not become a place of refuge that feels institutional, but a spatial framework that facilitates life to be rebuilt.
