Meet Jonas

Name: Jonas Borgström

Programme: Master’s Programme in Statistics and Data Science, 1st semester.

From: Jonas is originally från Vilhelmina, Västerbotten.

What was it that made you apply for the programme here in Umeå?

I graduated from the Bachelors Programme in Statistics and Data Science at USBE in 2020. It really opened up my eyes and I felt like I wanted to learn more about it. After about a year of parental leave I finally applied to the Masters Programme in Statistics and Data Science to extend my knowledge. The reason I applied for the programme in Umeå was the courses available and that I like the town and it's people.

What do you like best with the programme so far?

I think the best things in this programme would be the courses which provide lots of information on new interesting topics. That combined with a good mix of theoretical and practical problems for you to solve which helps when learning new things. And last but not least, I've really liked the lecturers for these courses, who seem genuinely interested in teaching you new things.

What would you like to work with when you graduate?

This is a really difficult question. On one hand I'd like to find a job as a data analyst/scientist, statistician or similar to put my new acquired skills to the test. But on the other hand I've gotten more interested in applying for a position as a PhD student in the future. But regardless of what I decide to do after I graduate I know that this programme opens many doors in my future career of choice.

What is it that you like about Umeå?

It's a cozy city where you don't get lost in concrete-filled suburbs. There's always things to do and you can meet lots of interesting people. But I think one of the best parts for me is that if you're tired from a day of studying (and/or work) you don't have to go far to be able to take a stroll through nature. And if you don't mind the cold you're in for a treat with some beautiful months with snow.

Is there anything about Swedish culture that you would like to tell us about?

Most of the Swedish stereotypes about being introverted and silent are very misleading, we're not that bad. We do however take "fika" and "lagom" seriously.

Do you have any advice for students that are thinking of applying to our programs?

I'd really recommend applying. Regardless of who you are and where you come from you can always find new interesting courses to study, new classmates/friends to hang out with and lots of activities to do outside of the university.
