Postdoctoral scholarship (2 years) in Stochastic Geometry on M-Polyfolds

The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics is offering a postdoctoral scholarship in stochastic geometry. The scholarship is full-time for two years, with access on 1 November 2025 or by agreement.

Project description
This scholarship is part of a research initiative aimed at developing a new mathematical theory for stochastic geometry on so-called M-polyfolds, spaces with locally varying dimensions. The project aims to enable modelling of systems where the number of degrees of freedom changes, which is relevant in areas such as artificial intelligence, signal processing, and physics.

The project will focus on:

  • Developing stochastic analysis and stochastic differential equations on M-polyfolds, which involves establishing concepts such as flows and drifts in an environment with variable dimension.
  • Proving a variant of the central limit theorem for a class of M-polyfolds, thereby showing that fundamental statistical principles remain valid despite changes in dimensional conditions.
  • Creating a framework for signal processing on M-polyfolds, with particular emphasis on radio and communication systems that require adaptation to varying numbers of connected devices.

The postdoctoral fellow is expected to conduct research in collaboration with the project group according to a jointly agreed research plan, present results at international conferences, and actively participate in joint seminars and workshops.  

The postdoctoral scholarship is based at the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at Umeå University. 

This postdoctoral scholarship is financed and administrated by the Kempe Foundations (project number JCSMK25-0004). The stipend is tax-free and will be 750 000 SEK for two years, meaning 375 000 SEK per year.

Qualifications
To qualify as a postdoctoral scholarship holder, the postdoctoral fellow is required to have completed a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree. This qualification requirements must be fulfilled no later than at the time of the decision about scholarship recipient. Priority should be given to candidates who completed their doctoral degree, according to what is stipulated in the paragraph above, no later than three years prior. If there are special reasons, candidates who completed their doctoral degree prior to that may also be eligible. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, clinical service, trade union duties or similar circumstances.

A doctoral degree is required in mathematics, applied mathematics, or another closely related subject with a specialization in differential geometry and stochastic analysis. Documented knowledge and solid experience in differential geometry, the theory of M-polyfolds, and stochastic processes are mandatory.

It is also a merit to have: 

  • Knowledge of stochastic differential equations on non-Euclidean spaces.
  • Knowledge of signal processing on manifolds.
  • Knowledge of interdisciplinary methods, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence and physics.
  • Excellent proficiency in English, both spoken and written.

  • Verified copy of doctoral degree certificate or documentation that clarifies when the degree of doctor is expected to be obtained,
  • Verified copies of other diplomas, list of completed academic courses and grades,
  • Copy of doctoral thesis and possibly 3 number of relevant articles,
  • Other documents that the applicant wishes to claim,
  • Contact information to two persons willing to act as references.
