Joao Figueira is a staff scientist at the Department of Chemistry, Umeå University, specializing in NMR spectroscopy. He supports researchers in designing experiments, analysing complex samples and using NMR to answer questions across chemistry and related fields.
What do you enjoy most about working here?
What I enjoy about my day-to-day work is getting to learn new things about different fields all the time while helping the local, national and international NMR platform users.
I would also like to point out how available everyone at the department is, in what feels like, to me at least, a very flat hierarchy.
What might surprise people about your job?
What might surprise other people is that I get to be involved with a lot of different tasks that do not fall directly bellow my work description. More importantly, I am happy to say that - for most of these tasks - I was the one putting myself forward and getting the support from my colleagues to develop the new responsibilities.
