The department is responsible for the Biomedical Analyst Programme and also provides teaching in several other programmes, offers degree projects and high-quality education at the doctoral level.
The Biomedical Analyst Programme is organizationally under the Department of Clinical Microbiology. The programme has existed in Umeå since the 1960s and became a three-year program during the 1990s and was then part of the School of Public Health. The name Biomedical Analyst as a professional title came around 1994-95. The programme has been given at Umeå University since 1997-98.
The department also has a significant educational assignments within the medical programme, the dental programme, the biomedical programme, the nursing programme and the programme for international crisis and conflict management at Umeå University.
Teaching is distributed between the teachers in the subject areas of biomedical laboratory science, virology, clinical bacteriology, infectious diseases, immunology and clinical immunology based on their subject expertise.
