About the department

The Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies combines researchers, teachers and students from many research areas within the humanities under one roof. This mix of creative people and ideas creates a dynamic atmosphere that facilitates strong research environments and a wide variety of courses.

The department is employing over 100 individuals, including lecturers, visiting research fellows, postdoctoral students, doctoral students and technical and administrative personnel. Many of our researchers are active within groups which have distinguished themselves and have reputations for their excellence, such as Population Studies and Pre-modern Studies. The department also hosts two national research infrastructures: The Environmental Archaeology Laboratory and the Strategic Environmental Archaeology Database (SEAD).

Our lecturers and researchers actively collaborate with the local and international community through projects, contributions to popular science publications and active participation in debates on culture and society. We also work together with other subjects and faculties within the University, such as the School of Education, and contribute to education in areas where our staff have particular expertise; for example within the philosophy of science, ethics, gender and diversity issues.
