The general aim of the course is to prepare for independent work with different CAID tools (Computer Aided Industrial Design). Students will perform a variety of practical exercises and learn to create advanced models with regard to both workflow efficiency, quantitative and qualitative requirements from specific modeling tasks. The instruction also includes how to digitally scan physical objects to be able to use them as a reference to process and refine form in specialized software. Students are trained in presentation methods including virtual reality, animation and real-time visualization. Knowledge of creating and exporting CAID files for physical modeling and rapid prototyping is also covered during the course.
Expected learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course the students should be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
Work independently with CAID tools in the application of computer-aided design process, from early concept modelling to finished prototype.
Account for the importance of a healthy work environment, time management skills and attention to ergonomics around the use of computers.
Competence and skills
Demonstrate ability to achieve a high level of control over tools used to generate virtual three-dimensional models
Illuminate and create colors and textures that simulate the shape of virtual 3D models.
Visualize virtual models in various formats and media; from still images to real-time rendering presentation.
Plan and produce CAID data for fabrication of physical objects.
Digitalize (scan) real-life objects or details for future work in the virtual 3D environment.
Judgement and approach
Analyze a three-dimensional design objective and from there, select the relevant strategy to produce a digital model.
Reflect about personal learnings and own development and account for future actions connected to the insights and feedback obtained during the course.
A Bachelor's degree or equivalent first-cycle qualification comprising of at least 180 ECTS or a corresponding qualification from an internationally recognized university. Specific entry requirements are: 60 ECTS credits in the field of Design. Student must have completed and passed the course CAID-Advanced level, step 1. English B/6.
Form of instruction
The course consists of lectures and exercises under the supervision of tutors. Since the tutoring is of an examining nature, all sections of the course are obligatory.
Examination is carried out as individual practical tests in the presence of an examiner, and also as presentations of the results of the assigned tasks. In order to pass the entire course, all of the various exercises and obligatory assignments must be completed and submitted for approval. The grade Fail (U) or Pass (G) is given for each assignment and part of the course.
For students in need of special pedagogical support due to disabilities, individual adaptation of examination forms should always be considered based on the students' needs. The examination form is adjusted within the framework of the course syllabus intended learning outcomes. The course coordinating teacher shall, upon request from the student, consult with the examiner to quickly decide on an adjusted form of examination. The decision shall then be conveyed to the student.
For students who have not obtained the grade Pass, other examination sessions will be arranged. A student who for two consecutive examinations for the same course or sub-course has not been passed, has the right to have another examiner appointed, if there are no special reasons against this (Higher Education Ordinance chapter 6, 22 §). The request for a new examiner shall be made in writing to the Head of Department at Umeå Institute of Design.
ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER Students have the right to request that previous studies, or equivalent knowledge and skills acquired in a professional, work-related capacity, be validated and transferred into credits on an equivalent course or programme at Umeå University. Applications for credit transfer should be addressed to Student Services/Degree Evaluation Office. More information can be found at the Umeå University student web site (www.student.umu.se/english) and in Chapter 6 of the Higher Education Ordinance. Appeals may be made to the Higher Education Appeals Board (ÖNH) against a decision by the university not to approve an application for credit transfer (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 12), even in cases where only a part of the application has been rejected.
