Theoretical and practical education should be complementary. During this course students are given the opportunity to conduct applied studies within tourism and destination analysis independently in close cooperation with the tourism industry.
Students choose together with a supervisor from the department a suitable organisation or company within the tourism industry.
Expected learning outcomes
After completing the course the student should be able to
- apply theoretical knowledge in tourism,
- analyze a touristic venture in relation to other stakeholders,
- critically scrutinize scientific theory and methods in relation to an empirical case study,
- suggest measures to develop the studied venture.
Required Knowledge
Univ: Degree of Bachelor or equivalently.
Form of instruction
Instruction is given as individual supervision. Students allocate their studies to an organization or a company within the tourism industry or administration. Students are expected to organize their internships themselves. No economic compensation will be given to the students who record additional expenses for conduction in the course. (Swedish students, however, can apply for additional loans from CSN.)
The course requires mandatory full-time studies during a 10-week-period, i.e. students are present during regular working hours at the work place.
A specially assigned supervisor and the program director share the pedagogical responsibility for the course. The role of the supervisor is as follows:
- to provide an individual study plan together with the student,
- to support the student regarding concrete questions,
- to provide skills on how theory and practice may be combined,
- to create the student´s awareness of own resources and skills,
- to provide informal information on requirements and opportunities regarding a career in the tourism industry.
Examination modes
A written report is the basis for examination. The grades awarded are Pass (G) and Fail (U).
Examination based on the same syllabus as at the ordinary examination is guaranteed during two years after the first registration to the course.
Students who have passed an examination cannot redo the examination to receive a higher grade.
It is not possible to appeal against a received grade, i.e. to get it examined by a higher authority, but a student can always criticize the grading or ask another examiner to reconsider the examination.
When a student has failed an examination on two occasions, he or she has a right to have another grading teacher. A written request for an alternative examiner should be handed to the director of studies.
ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER
Credit transfer is always examined individually.
