The course treats vision as information processing with a focus on computational challenges in artificial and biological visual systems. Particularly emphasis it put on the underspecified nature of several visual problems are treated as well as how artificial and biological systems attempt to solve those problems. The course treats basic image capturing methods, perceptual organization, depth and categorization. Furthermore, the course deals with visual perceptual learning, attention and gaze control.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding After the course, the student should:
* have knowledge about the human ability to perceive recognize, remember and imagine objects and scenes * have knowledge about different theories on perception and an understanding for applications of these theories on artificial systems * Knowledge about machine vision techniques to capture, analyze and use visual information
Skills and ability After the course, the student should:
* have the ability to apply and integrate this knowledge in a project. * have the ability to communicate the project results in written and oral presentation
Evaluation ability and approach After the course, the student should:
* have a deeper understanding for cognitive science methods * have an improved ability in evaluating scientific studies on visual cognition
Required Knowledge
90 hp in the subject area of cognitive science or equivalent. These 90 hp should include the following courses: Logic and Formal Methods, 7.5 hp, Applied Cognitive Psychology, 7.5 hp, Programming in Python, 7.5 hp and Data Structures and Algorithms (Python), 7.5 hp, or equivalent.
Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper Secondary course English A/6.
Where the language of instruction is Swedish, applicants must prove proficiency in Swedish to the level required for basic eligibility for higher studies.
Form of instruction
Teaching is carried out via lectures, seminars and demonstrations as well as through supervision in programming assignments and during the project. The teaching is campus based but can include online teaching.
The right to receive teaching and supervision applies only during the time the course, for which the student is registered to, is ongoing.
Examination modes
The examination includes written examination, programming assignment, including individual written lab report and oral and written presentations of a project report at a seminar. Oral examination may be in digital format.

A student who has failed two tests for a course or a part of a course, is entitled to have another examiner appointed, unless there are specific reasons against it (HF 6 Chap. 22 §). Requests for new examiners are made to the head of the department of Psychology. Students have the right to be tested on the same curriculum as the regular examination at least two occasions up to two years after the first registration.
