Contents

This course comprises psychiatric nursing, commonly occurring mental illness among adults and legislation in psychiatric care. The course's content is problematised from an sustainability perspective. The course contains 12 weeks of clinical placement (VFU) in different contexts where the student practices identifying and supporting the individual's, patient's and relatives resources. During clinical placement the student shall, based on the nursing process and current laws and regulations with a person-centred and patient-safe approach, independently under supervision identify needs related to mental and somatic illness. Based on this, the nursing care is planned, implemented, evaluated and documented.

During clinical placement, opportunities are provided to train relationship creation and communication, to train on prevention, support and teaching, and to practise patient-safe care and optimization of health through nursing planning and documentation. In connection with clinical placement, two occasions of professional supervision in nursing (YHiO) will be held.

Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student shall be able to:

  • present an account of nursing, functional assessment, treatment, recovery, rehabilitation and prevention related to mental and somatic illnesses
  • present an account of current legislation in psychiatric care

Skills and abilities

Required Knowledge

Admission requirements to the course are, passing courses in semesters 1-2, passing clinical placement (VFU) and participation in professional supervision in nursing in semester 3.

Form of instruction

A student-active learning is applied that is characterised by knowledge-seeking, problem solving and reflection. A problematised approach permeates the course. The work methods vary between individual work, study group work, seminars, lectures and clinical placement. Cinical placement is conducted in psychiatric care, primary care and somatic inpatient care in the department's/faculty's agreement areas, where guaranteed admission can be provided. Mandatory parts in the course are professional supervision in nursing (YHiO), seminars and tasks in each clinical placement.

Some teaching and literature may be in English. The course will offer international exchange opportunities.

The online elements in the course require access to a computer with a stable Internet connection, a headset with a microphone and a webcam are required. Internet access can be provided via networks in a campuslearning centre or library.

For distance students, in addition to clinical placement, there is no gathering in the study location.

Examination modes

A two-grade grading scale applies: pass (G) and fail (U).

The course is examined in the form of an individual web-based exam, individual written assignment, and a seminar that is assessed based on set criteria. During the three clinical placements, separate grades are set based on knowledge, skills and approach.

To pass (G) the whole course, a pass must be obtained in all examinations, and mandatory parts must be conducted. A student who has failed twice has the right to request that the Programme Council provide another examiner.

A student who has failed a clinical placement will be offered one (1) new placement equivalent to the failed  placement in terms of duration and content. A student who discontinues his or her placement in advance on his or her own initiative can be given the grade fail (U).

The responsible examiner may, in consultation with the relevant supervisor, decide to fail a student during a clinical placement in case the student exhibits such deficiencies regarding knowledge, skills or approach that these, individually or in combination, entail a significant risk that the student may, in practice, harm another person physically or mentally. The student will then prematurely interrupt his or her placement and fail the relevant course. One placement opportunity is thereby expended.

In connection with such a decision, an individual development plan must be drawn up by the examiner in consultation with the student. The development plan must identify knowledge, skills and approach that the student needs to acquire to resume the clinical placement and a time when the follow up will occur. The student is entitled to two such follow ups per year. However, the total number of follow ups should not exceed four, unless there are special circumstances. If the student shows, when such follow ups are conducted, that he or she has acquired the knowledge, skills and approach identified in the development plan, the student shall have a right to complete a new placement period, provided that the student has not expended his or her maximum placement opportunities. If the syllabus states a limited number of examinations and the student has expended these, the student has no right to additional examinations.

During clinical placement, there are requirements for a professional approach, including the clothing and hygiene, which must be complied in accordance with the directives of the receiving unit.

Examiner may decide to deviate from the syllabus examination format. Individual adaptation of the examination format should be considered based on the student's needs. The examination format is adapted within the within the framework of the expected syllabus study result. A student who require an adapted examination - and have received a decision on the right to support from the coordinator at the Student Services Office for students with disabilities - must submit a request to the department holding the course no later than 10 days before the examination. The examiner decides on the adaptation of the examination, after which the student will be notified.

Credit transfer
The student can apply for a credit transfer in respect of the entire or a part of the course based on previously completed education or professional activities. Rejections of credit transfer applications in whole or in part must be justified in writing. Appeals against rejections of credit transfer applications should be submitted to the Higher Education Appeals Board. For more information, please contact Studentcentrum/Examina.

Health and vaccination programme

Before beginning their placement, students at the Faculty of Medicine at Umeå University are to be offered vaccination against Hepatitis B. In addition, students who have not received vaccinations against COVID-19 or measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) are to be invited to take these vaccinations. The Faculty of Medicine will only cover the costs that arise as part of the health and vaccination programme if they were incurred as part of the sessions organised by the programme.

Access to placements

Generally, placements (including clinical placements) are conducted within the respective programme's agreement in collaboration with Regions, the primary municipalities and a few private providers. If the student does not fulfil the hosting organisation's requirements, within for example work-environment and patient security aspects, they cannot be guaranteed access to a placement. In that case, the University will explore the possibility of offering the student an alternative placement within the framework of the University's agreements.
