Contents

This course provides an introduction to Umeå Institute of Design workshops, computers and communications networks. It further provides an introduction to the subject Interaction design.

  1. Introductory Exercise, 1.5 credits.
    The part contains of a task which should be solved individually and in groups. Students from all masters work together.
  2. Basic Skills, 1.5 credits.
    This part introduces the workshop technology and safety regulations for workshop work. It introduces further computers and communications networks, as well as standard programs InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.
  3. Interaction Project, 3 credits.
    This part introduces the understanding and application of the concept of interaction. Project goals are specified in the form of interactive processes and the course part is implemented in cooperation with programs that originated in other disciplines than industrial design, such as MDI.
  4. Reflection, 1.5 credits.
    Element includes reflection exercises, individually and in groups. A special attention is devoted to collaborative design processes.

Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course students will be able to:

  • Use the facilities of Umeå Institute of Design at a basic skill level
  • Account for the basic philosophy of Umeå Institute of Design when it comes to interaction design and what alternative approaches you can have on the subject.
  • Carry out a design project with a focus on "interactive process" rather than "physical objects"
  • Present insight and understanding of the challenges and risks associated with working in multidisciplinary groups.

Required Knowledge

A Bachelor's degree or equivalent first-cycle qualification comprising of at least 180 ECTS or a corresponding qualification from an internationally recognized university. Specific entry requirements are: 60 ECTS credits in the field of Design. Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6.

Form of instruction

Lectures and practical training under the guidance of a supervisor. Qualified professional designers as well as teachers from Umeå Institute of Design work as supervisors. All parts of the course are compulsory.

Examination modes

The examination consists of the presentation of project work and tasks. To pass the course, all parts of the course have to be completed. The grades given are either Pass (G) or fail (U) for each task and course moment, as well as the course as a whole.
For students who have not obtained the grade Pass, other examination sessions will be arranged. A student who for two consecutive examinations for the same course or sub-course has not been passed, has the right to have another examiner appointed, if there are no special reasons against this (Higher Education Ordinance chapter 6, 22 §). The request for a new examiner shall be made in writing to the Head of Department at Umeå Institute of Design.

ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER
Students have the right to request that previous studies, or equivalent knowledge and skills acquired in a professional, work-related capacity, be validated and transferred into credits on an equivalent course or programme at Umeå University.  Applications for credit transfer should be addressed to Student Services/Degree Evaluation Office. More information can be found at the Umeå University student web site (www.student.umu.se/english) and in Chapter 6 of the Higher Education Ordinance.  Appeals may be made to the Higher Education Appeals Board (ÖNH) against a decision by the university not to approve an application for credit transfer (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 12), even in cases where only a part of the application has been rejected.
