The aim of this course is to establish a basic understanding of the different types of chemical and physical methods that may be employed on-line, at-line and in-line to monitor chemical processes. Examples of spectroscopic, chromatographic, physical and electrochemical devices will be discussed. Sampling procedures and sample pre-treatment methods will be considered in detail and the use of multivariate chemometric analysis to convert sensor response data into control parameters for process optimization will be examined. In the context of such optimization, particular attention will be given to maximizing yield and minimizing process waste in order to improve both external and internal industrial environments.

Required Knowledge

Analytical Chemistry (5KE081, 15 hp), or the equivalent. For students at the Master of Science Programme in Energy Engineering: Engineering Chemistry I (5KE040, 7.5 hp), Engineering Chemistry II (5KE090, 7.5 hp), Combustion, Gasification and Pyrolysis (5KE015, 7,5 hp) and Measurement and Control Systems (5EN015, 7.5 hp). English proficiency equivalent to IELTS Academic Training - miniumum score 5.0 with no individual score below 4.5 (test taken before January 2005 not admissible), or TOEFL - minimum score 500 on paper based test and not below 4.0 on the TWE, alternatively 173 on computer based test with iBT61 is also reguired as well as basic entrance requirements for higher studies in Swedish language proficiency if the course is taught in Swedish.
