The Research Seminar Series in Philosophy invites you to a seminar with Alex Sandgren, "Natural Names as Suitable Tools in Plato's Cratylus".

Abstract: In this paper I propose and defend an unorthodox interpretation of Plato's metasemantics (i.e. Plato's account of what makes it the case that words mean what they mean) asset forth in the Cratylus. In particular, I will argue that my interpretation should be prefered to the two most common alternative interpretations since they fail to properly reflect Plato's contention (in the Cratylus and elsewhere) that language is a tool for communicating and asking and answering questions.

All interested are welcome to participate in this seminar.

This seminar is held online in Zoom. Link for participation will be distributed by email to the seminar distribution list. If you wish to participate but are not on this list you can get the link by contacting Pär Sundström, see below.
