What Do We Need Art For?

Bildmuseet turns 40! As part of the celebration, we invite you to join a digital forum on our website where artists, curators, researchers, authors, musicians, dramatists and other invited guests answer the question: 'What Do We Need Art For?'. What is the role of art in our contemporary moment marked by climate change, challenged democracies and human rights, and where millions of people are forced to become refugees? What is the role of art during a current pandemic?

Listen to JOHN AKOMFRAH, artist and filmmaker, London; ANTONIA ALAMPI, curator and artistic director, Berlin; GAVIN BUTT, professor and researcher in art and queer studies, Newcastle; MATS CALDEBORG, artist and artistic director, Järnäsklubb; JUMANA EMIL ABBOUD, artist, Jerusalem; SOFIA JANNOK, musician, Umeå; GRADA KILOMBA, artist and philosopher, Berlin; MARIA LIND, curator and cultural counsellor, Moscow; DENNIS LYXZÉN, musician, Vännäs; NAEEM MOHAIEMEN, artist and filmmaker, New York; CEDRIC NUNN, photographer and documentary filmmaker, Mangethe; TONE OLAF NIELSEN, curator and writer, Copenhagen; STINA OSCARSON, dramatist and writer, Stockholm; KATARINA PIERRE, Curator and museum director, Umeå University; KATARINA PIRAK SIKKU, artist, Jokkmokk; LARS STRANNEGÅRD, professor and president of Stockholm School of Economics.

We have invited people that we think will contribute interesting points of view to the discussion. Some of them are artists and curators with whom we have previously collaborated and who are part of Bildmuseet’s history. We have also invited other individuals who, based on their professional and personal experiences, can help us answer the urgent question 'What Do We Need Art For?'.
