Both work and family?: Patterns of women’s return to work after having children, Sweden 1880-1960
Abstract:
Women have historically been straddled between the domains of wage work and family (childbearing and childcare), and significant legal, time, and normative constraints made it difficult for women to combine these two areas of their lives. This paper looks into if and how women were nonetheless able to combine wage work and family within a Swedish context between 1880 and 1960.
Therefore, the focus lies on patterns and developments of mothers’ working conditions in a pre-welfare state context. Specifically, this paper details women’s propensity and timing of returning to wage work after childbirth, with differences across time periods and between socio-economic statuses and specific occupations being of primary interest. Through analysis of women’s propensity and timing of combining wage work and family, the paper identifies pre-welfare state time periods that were especially transformational, as well as more and less mother-friendly historical occupations.
All interested are welcome to participate in CEDAR seminars. The seminars are held on floor 4 NBET and online via Zoom. If you wish to participate via zoom contact Mojgan Padyab.
