The Research Seminar Series in Archaeology and Environmental archaeology invites you to a seminar with Prof. Cheryl Makarewicz from the Institute of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Archaeology at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität, Kiel. The seminar title is "Mutton and Millet: The intensification of pastoralism in Bronze Age Altai".

Abstract: The spread of domesticated animals to the Altai during the late fourth millennium BCE was accompanied by distinct pastoralist dietary strategies that helped facilitate the establishment of bovid livestock herds. This talk discusses initial Afanasievo pastoralist adaptations to the challenging environments of the Altai and examines later intensification of pastoralist pathways by subsequent Bronze Age communities, focusing on the articulation between human dietary dynamics, herd management strategies, and cultivar transmissions through integrated stable isotopic, zooarchaeological, and organic residue analyses.

This seminar will be held online in Zoom. Link for paticipation is sent via email to all employees within the subject well in advance of the seminar. If you do not have a participant link, contact the seminar organizers below.
