Are you interested in gaining a deeper understanding of science denial and discovering effective ways to deal with it? The Dialogue Forum on Science Denial will be arranged in a collaboration between the Climate Change Leadership initiative at Uppsala University and Umeå Transformation Research Initiative (UTRI) at Umeå University. It aims to promote knowledge-sharing and discussions around the concept of science denial, its causes and manifestations.

As science denial can be especially problematic in the early stages of an academic career, the dialogue primarily targets young researchers (PhD students and post-docs). However, we also extend a warm welcome to senior researchers interested in participating.

The Dialogue Forum will be chaired by Mikael Karlsson, Senior Lecturer in Climate change Leadership, Associate Professor in Environmental Science, and Daniel Lindvall, PhD in Sociology. Mikael Karlsson brings extensive research experience in climate policy and climate denial, often serving as an expert in government inquiries. Daniel Lindvall's research revolves around the intersection of democracy and climate issues, emphasizing democratic participation and knowledge as critical factors.

The event will begin with a brief lecture by Mikael Karlsson and Daniel Lindvall, focusing on climate denial, and then move into an open discussion format where participants can actively engage in conversations and reflections on science denial. The dialogue forum encompasses both open discussions and practical exercises to increase the understanding of science denial and explore strategies to address it.

Key discussion points:

  • What is science denial?
  • Who challenges research findings on an unscientific basis?
  • What strategies can be employed to counter individuals who critique one's research or research outcomes unscientifically?
  • How can researchers effectively manage time-consuming questioning, harassment and threats?

The dialogue forum will be conducted on-site and in English. Spaces are limited to 30 participants. Join us for the Dialogue Forum on Science Denial – an opportunity to explore the critical issue of science denial and its implications.

Fika will be served during the break.
