An exhibition by BFA2, Umeå Academy of Fine Arts
"Go first to your old plant and watch carefully the watercourse made by the rain. By now the rain must have carried the seeds far away. Watch the crevices made by the runoff, and from them determine the direction of the flow. Then find the plant that is growing at the farthest point from your plant. All the devil's weed plants that are growing in between are yours. Later you can extend the size of your territory by following the watercourse from each point along the way" (Deleuze/Guattari: "Introduction – Rhizome" in A Thousand Plateaus).
In A Thousand Plateaus, Deleuze and Guattari draw dichotomies, lines and circles. Some circles encompass other circles, some are separate black holes. Over the lines and circles they add flows. The human being is a segmentary animal, constantly sorting things, from the smallest to the largest. We are segmented in a circular fashion with the individual in the center surrounded by our block, our city, our country, the world. We are segmented in a linear fashion starting with our family, then our school, job, home for the elderly. To break out is to create a line of flight.
How does one navigate in an age that keeps spinnning faster and faster and that seems intent on extinguishing itself? In this exhibition we draw a landscape. This is both an outer landscape surrounding us but also an inner landscape to traverse and discover. We have followed the crevices, found our plants and extended our territory. This exhibition is about finding an in-between space where art and creation are possible.
